Housing with support
Housing with support (Supported Housing) offers a number of services that enable people to keep their independence while they receive the support services they need. Examples include sheltered (also known as category 2 housing) or semi-sheltered housing (also known as category 1), or the services provided under the Supporting People programme.
Sheltered housing
Sheltered housing is generally for people over retirement age. Residents have their own private homes, which are fitted with an emergency call system.
Scheme managers and staff provide added support during working hours, and maintain the services residents share, such as communal cleaning and landscape gardening.
Semi-sheltered housing
Semi-sheltered homes do not have scheme managers, but are an ideal choice for people wanting independence and privacy, and the added reassurance of an emergency call system.
To find out where we have sheltered housing, please visit our Homes for rent page and choose the area where you would like to live. We may not have sheltered or semi-sheltered homes everywhere.
Supporting People
Supporting People is a government programme that plans, funds, and monitors housing related support services. Its aim is to improve the quality and effectiveness of local support services to help people with a range of support needs live independently.
With the government’s supporting people team, our supported housing team manages how we provide and develop our support services to residents in our schemes and in their own homes, to help them maintain their independence and their tenancies. The support is individual and offers practical help with issues such as welfare benefits, budgeting, life skills, finding employment and accessing other agencies for specialist support.
Our tenancies are offered with support provided by our own staff, or the agents for support that we work with, including MIND, Age Concern, Women’s Aid, and other local and national agencies.
