On three glorious days in July, judging took place for the 2011 gardening challenge which had once again see lots of entries to all categories.
Resident judges, Gill Ladds and Tony Plumstead, were given the opportunity to view each entry, all of which they agreed were of a very high standard.
Tony commented “This year's entries were the best that I have seen in all the time that I have had the pleasure of judging the Gardening Competition. As judges, we had a difficult decision finding a winner, as in our opinion everyone was a winner.”
Playing bird songs during a re-development of homes in South Cambridgeshire has helped Accent Nene protect the largest colony of swifts in East Anglia.
The population of swifts was identified at prefabricated properties before work began to replace them with modern homes, and ecologists have worked with Accent Nene and local communities to put measures in place to protect the nesting birds.
Special bird boxes have been integrated into the cavity walls of the new homes at Accent Nene’s re-development in Fulbourn – and a CD playing the nesting call of swifts was used to attract birds to their new homes.
Following an overwhelming election victory Accent Nene has joined the other three main housing associations in Peterborough in sponsoring this year’s Peterborough Youth MP, Kamal Hyman.
Accent Nene, Axiom, Cross Keys Homes and Hyde Minster agreed to sponsor Kamal after he was elected following a gruelling question time. Kamal is keen to work hard to promote and support youth issues and the housing associations, as sponsors, are looking to offer him placements with them all during the year.
The four landlords are also keen that Kamal becomes an advocate by learning more about the opportunities offered by a career in housing. Kamal is taking a year off school so he can concentrate on the role.
